Hanalei Bay - Kauai's North shore's most popular beach

On this trip, we take you to Hanalei bay, on the North shore of Kauai in the Princeville area.

If you are traveling from the east or south of Kauai, you will pass through the scenic coastline, and beautiful resort town of Princeville.

Hanalei Bay Overlook

Once you are past the Princeville area malls, you will reach the Hanalei valley overlook. It’s a small-sized viewpoint that can accommodate 3-4 cars, but picture perfect views of the Hanalei river and taro plantation makes up for it. On a sunny day, you see dramatic mountains, green meadows on the foothills, and blue sky. Around the Hanalei river there are wetlands where the Taro farms stretches hundreds of acres.

So, don't get surprised when you get a Taro pie in your Mcdonald's at Hawaii.

Okolehao Viewpoint

On your next stop, you can go to the Okolehao trail for a bird eye view of the Hanalei bay. The trail is 2.5 mile roundtrip and climbs to an elevation of around 1000 feet. The hike is worth it, and you will be rewarded with captivating views of Hanalei Bay and other prominent landmarks on the North shore.

The beginning of the trail is steep. If you don’t have time to hike the entire trail, don’t worry, you will be rewarded with rewarding views within the first 10 mins of hike. However, as you keep climbing higher, you see the magnificent views of crescent shape of the Hanalei bay.

Hanalei Beach

Getting down from the Okolehao trail, your next stop is the beach. On your approach to the Hanalei bay from any side, the road shrinks, there are quick turns, and one lane bridges forcing tourists to respect the local traffic rules.

There are a couple of beach parks in the Hanalei Bay. You can swim, surf, paddle board, or play beach volleyball, hike trails or walk on this stunning beach.

Hanalei Pier

The Hanalei pier is an iconic landmark. It was built-in the late 19th century as a rice and sugar transportation hub. In 1958, the movie “South pacific” was shot here. The movie put Kauai and Hanalei Bay on the map. The Pier stretches in to the bay and offers panoramic view of mountains, waterfalls, and the sprawling shoreline. The Pier is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. You can fish, watch surfing, watch sunset, and go for a romantic walk.

Best tIme to visit: During Summer Jun-July-Aug. During winter you will find big swells and ocean at the north shore will be dangarouns.

Family beach: Yes

Public restrooms: Yes

Picnic tables: Yes. Limited shade. You have to get your own beach umbrella

Activities: Swimming, surfing, snorkeling, romantic walk, beach volleyball, fishing, paddle board

Polihale Beach - Imagine the unimaginable

Don't travel before reading this post. Thank us later.

Ever imagined yourself in the wilderness on one of the finest beaches of the world. Did you think further that it was not going to crowded ? Did you know that you can take your car with you?

Welcome to Polihale Beach at Polihale State Park. Clear Blue, Green water, Miles of Golden sand, jagged cliffs, and high surf with no one else to share. If you get lucky, you will see spinner dolphins, monk seals and may be a migrating whale.

Well there is a catch. You will have a break a sweat to get to it. The last 4 miles of drive is a dirt road with huge and deep potholes. That’s what makes this beach less crowded. You don’t need a car with 4 wheel drive, as long as you drive slow, avoid potholes, and don’t go onto the beach with your car.

If it rains, steer clear. The potholes will be filled with water, you won't know how deep they are, and you will have a tough time navigating the road without risking your car.

If you have a 4 wheel drive, you can get on the beach. If you have a 4 wheel drive pickup truck, you will have to deflate your tires before heading to the beach.

The Polihale beach is on the west coast of Kauai, and not accessible by car from the Northern side of the island.

This beach is popular for Surfing.  There are No life guards, and surf is very high. There is a campground on the northern side of the state park

You will witness Na Pali style jagged cliffs because this area is the extension of Na Pali coast.

There is a beautiful lookout that you can drive to, and is only accessible from the Waimea Canyon area.

No lifeguards, No Restrooms, No Food and Beverage for at least 10-15 miles
